Yea-Nay

Yea-Nay

Todd Nibert

In II Cor. 1:18, Paul said, "But as god is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay". What Paul said he was not guilty of is a summary of most preaching in our day......"yea and nay". Inconsistent. Contradictory. Answering yes and no to the same question. Here are some examples of "yea and nay" preaching.

"Is salvation all of grace?" The yea-nay preacher says, "Yes and no". Yes it is all of grace, but no you must do your part before God can do His. "Is the blood of Christ a sufficient sin payment?" The yea-nay preacher says, "Yes and no". Yes, He paid for the sins of all men to ever live, but no, you can end up in hell anyway if you don't do your part. "Is love and gratefulness to Christ enough to motivate a believer?" The yea-nay preacher says "Yes and no". Yes, of course it is enough. But no, we don't really believe that. Therefore we will hold out higher rewards in heaven and the danger of losing something in order to motivate (manipulate is actually a better word) people. "Is the Gospel really the power of God unto salvation?" "Why of course it is," says the yea-nay preacher, but he denies that by using fleshly methods and manipulations to "get people saved" and "keep them saved".

I, for one, hate yea-nay preaching. It is so confusing and contradictory . Like Paul said in I Cor. 14:8, "For if the trumpet give an uncertain (indistinct) sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?"

What is behind "yea-nay" preaching? I say without apology, COMPROMISE! Yea-nay preachers don't want to openly deny what God's Word says, yet for various reasons such as keeping from offending a big giver or fear of stunting "church growth", they will present the truth in vague, ambiguous, and contradictory terms to keep everybody happy. They have obviously forgotten the words of Paul....."For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ". The bottom line is, "yea-nay preachers" are not seeking God's glory. They are seeking their own. The Lord said in John 5:44, "How can ye believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not that honor that cometh from God only".

Paul said, "Our word toward you was not yea and nay, but in Him was yea. For all the promises of God in Him are yea." Here are some examples of "yea" preaching.

"Is salvation all of grace?" Yes! Every part of salvation is by grace. Election is by grace. Redemption is by grace. Regeneration (the new birth) is by grace. Faith is the gift of grace and not the product of free will. Free will is a denial of free grace! We are caused to persevere by His grace. Even the love we have to Him is the gift of His grace! Is the blood of Christ a sufficient sin payment? Yes! If Christ paid for your sins, they are paid for.....period! All that He died for must be saved! He died for His elect, and accomplished their salvation! The very justice of God demands it. To preach a redemption that may not redeem is yea-nay preaching. Is love for and gratefulness to Christ enough to motivate a believer? Yes! And we prove we believe that by not trying to use guilt -manipulation or hold out some higher reward in heaven to motivate people. Those kind of motives in service to God are bondage! They are obnoxious to Him! Is the Gospel really the power of God unto salvation? Yes! And we prove we believe that by preaching the Gospel. We don't attempt to draw people into the church with gimmicks or services we have to offer. We simply preach the Gospel, looking to God to take care of the results.

Do you see how much more easy to understand and above board "yea preaching" is over "yea-nay preaching? May God deliver us from yea-nay preaching and may God deliver us from yea-nay believing!
