The church in the New Testament times (while the canon of New Testament scriptures was being formed) was basically a simple company of people. It had no formal organization, though it was an orderly assembly. They met for the purpose of prayer and preaching; and around that simple program they worshipped Christ, the true God.
It appears also that their coming together was for fellowship in the things of the gospel. In this they seem to share in testimony to one another the mercies of God upon them. Their conversations were designed for edification and the strengthening of each other in the Christian faith.
They had no coinmittees and no separate brotherhoods or women's organizations,no clubs and separate functions for the young. The assembly formed the brotherhood and, we might add, sisterhood. They never had deacons until there was a need; and when that need arose, they were very selective as to the quality and quantity of those that filled that office.
They seem to have prospered well in this simple form of worship, the exposition of scripture, the mission of the church, and the support of each other. I'm of the opinion that if such simplicity worked well for them, it will work well for us.
